Mondo and the Victorian Government’s Microgrid Demonstration Initiative

Across Victoria Mondo is engaged in a suite of applications to the Victorian Government’s Microgrid Demonstration Initiative. This program, funded by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning aims to support microgrid trials across the state.

The term microgrid is being used to define a very broad range of approaches to the integrated adoption of renewable energy generation, electricity storage, sharing and orchestration. Microgrids can occur with a particular geographic focus like a group of houses, businesses or mixed properties. Such a microgrid can be identified with the ‘Yackandandah Heights Microgrid’ . Alternatively a microgrid can be managed at a ‘virtual level,’ where an overarching unifying administrative layer is added to a billing system. This records movement of power from individual sites in to the national energy market and this can notionally be purchased by anyone participating in the program anywhere in the national energy market.

Loosely speaking, a collection of microgrids creates a minigrid.

Though announcements about the successful bids are due, as of the time of writing, no public notice has been provided. But be assured, very shortly Victoria will be sporting an exciting diversity of trials and demonstrations of microgrids. Managed well, this evolution offers a really compelling advantage to the national electricity network – the ability to adopt micro influence to optimise overall system performance.

Standby for the announcements!
